Who are we?
Strathclyde International Development (SID) is a student run, student led charity who work with small non-governmental organisations that run sustainable, low-cost development projects. We understand that poverty is far too big a problem to tackle on our own, but we have a passion for making a difference. Making that difference starts with you! Be the change you want to see in the world.
The SID committee is made up entirely of previous project volunteers. As we are a student run charity, we rely on previous volunteer’s knowledge and experience to organise and coordinate recruitment, training and fundraising. The committee for 2017/18 has eight members, who have all completed projects over the last three years with SID and our partner charities.
Every year, SID volunteers hold a variety of events including bake sales, pub quizzes and ceilidhs to raise money for their project. Our annual ceilidh is always a fun event, with this year’s ceilidh taking place at 7pm on Friday 23rd March @ The Barony Bar, Level 2, USSA. There will be a live ceilidh band, drinks promotions and games throughout the night! We also run Information Events and stalls during Freshers’ and Refreshers’ Week.
What we offer:
With previous summer projects in Uganda, Nepal and Malawi, SID offers a number of unique and unforgettable volunteering experiences across the globe. Each of our projects involve working with a range of non-government and community-based organisations and are adaptable to the needs of the community.
Our overseas projects range in focus, from teaching and basic construction, to securing water supplies and internships conducting research into Human Rights. We offer projects suitable for all fields of study, so it is important to understand how you can help.
We believe that volunteering shouldn't need to cost a fortune, which is why we work hard to keep costs as low as possible. The project costs vary slightly, depending on what project you want to work on, but all our projects cost around £800.
This money goes straight to the NGO you'll be working with. It does not include flights, vaccinations, personal travel insurance or any outside excursions you may want to take part in. It does include all food, accommodation and necessary travel while on project, as well as the cost of construction materials and skilled labour.
Unlike other clubs and societies, we DO NOT charge a membership fee, so come on what are you waiting for? Get in touch and we will match you up with the perfect project for you!
All of our projects go through a rigorous evaluation process to ensure that they deliver a real benefit for the communities and NGOs we work with and provide all of the necessary infrastructure to enable us to send out volunteers. Considering this, some projects will continually change and adapt and there are different projects running every year.
