Who are we?

StrathLoop is one of the biggest student societies of the University of Strathclyde. We are a group of creative and innovative people striving to find solution to challenging real-world problems.

StrathLoop was created with the idea to push transportation forward towards a more efficient and eco-friendly mode. Our vision is to be a reference in the world of transportation by innovative designs and ideas. The idea of this program is also to expose students to real world problems and give them the opportunity to manage a project autonomously and see that project come to fruition. StrathLoop helps students apply what they learn in university but also teaches them new one to help them develop their professional and personal skills.

SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition

We are competing in the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition to design and build a prototype hyperloop pod, then race it on a 1.3-kilometre test track at SpaceX’s Headquarters in California over the Summer. Last year, the competition saw over 1300+ teams applying to the competition. After several selection rounds StrathLoop secured a place in the Top 34 teams out of these 1300+ teams during the Final Design Presentation stage of the competition. This was just 10 teams away from being in the competition final to build and go to California to race our prototype pod. More about the competition here.

What is the Hyperloop?

Hyperloop is a concept first proposed in the ‘Hyperloop Alpha’ whitepaper by Elon Musk (SpaceX). It is a fifth mode of transportation for people and cargo, in which pods similar to trains are levitated and electrically propelled through near vacuum tubes at up to 700mph. This would reduce Glasgow to London to a 45-minute journey. Companies including Virgin Hyperloop One and Hyperloop Transportation Technologies are currently working on implementing the technology on a global scale. A video explaining hyperloop here.

Our Mission

StrathLoop’s mission is to offer graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity and the tools to develop a safe, performant and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. We deeply value the fact that the transportation revolution should be accessible to everybody which is the reason why we make all our designs open source and publicly available.
