Monday 22nd - Friday 26th November

ESSW is about supporting and celebrating estranged students. Estranged students are one of a number of student groups who come under our widening access community. These students are statistically more likely to face barrier both in entering higher education, and in staying there. That's why we as an SU have developed a number of projects, funds, events and even a Care Experienced and Estranged Society to help support such students and improve their student experience whilst studying at Strathclyde.

What is an Estranged Student?

Estranged students are those who are studying without the support and/or approval of their family network, due to a breakdown in relationships. This might be their biological, step or adoptive parents, or wider family members, who have been involved in their care.

ESSW21 will kick off with our social media campaign #notjustestranged, highlighting the ‘whole identity’ of estranged students. Shifting the focus from their estrangement, estranged students are invited to share their achievements, big or small, with the #notjustestranged. Many estranged people live successful, fulfilled, and happy lives, and we at Strath Union want to celebrate this. To take part, or learn more email: or share individually using #notjustestranged.

Estranged Student Drop in Session

Estranged Student Drop in SessionCome along for a catch-up over coffee as part of the Estranged Student Solidarity Week! Estranged students are invited to pop along between the hours of 2 and 4pm to meet the team, learn more about support and events on offer and offer feedback.

The event will begin with an informal introduction from our three hosts; Sofia Khan (Access and Participation Coordinator at Strath Union) Sam Upton and Chelbi Hillan (Care experienced and Estranged Society conveners) and Louise Martin (Senior Widening Access Officer at University of Strathclyde). Each host will give a brief overview of support, funding, events and ways to get involved in each of their remits.
