Opportunity Details

Sighted Guide Volunteer

This opportunity takes place from 25 Nov 2021

We are Guide Dogs and we’re here to help people with sight loss live the life they choose. Our ambition is a future where every person with sight loss has the confidence and support they need to live their lives to the full. We are looking for volunteer to make a life-changing difference to people in their community living with sight loss. We have had quite a few people on the waiting list for a Sighted Guide volunteer over lockdown and we would love to be able to partner them up with volunteers so they can start getting back out and about. “Volunteering has given me a sense of pride and a spring in my step as through giving up a small portion of my day and merely having a simple conversation can mean the world to someone else.” – Sighted Guide Student Volunteer

What does the role involve?

We provide our My Sighted Gudie service to people with a visual impairment who might not want a guide dog or feel that a guide dog is not the right option for them. You will be partnered up with someone who has sight loss and will go out with them, usually once a week, to do pre-agreed activities. This could be anything from going shopping, going to the cinema, joining a club or exercise class together, going for coffe or a meal, or just a simple walk and a chat. It all depends on what the perosn's goals are and what you are comfortable doing in your partnership. Partnerships are ongoing with the shortest lasting a minimum of 6 months.

All our volunteer expenses are covered as we want to make sure that our volunteering opportunities are not restricted and that no one is out of pocket because of their volunteering.

It is a common misconception that sight loss only affects older people, however, sight loss is sadly increasing in young people. There are a number of young people living in Glasgow with sight loss and we would love to be able to partner them up with someone of a similar age with similar interests.

As you will be working directly with one of our clients, you will undergo a full enhanced disclosure check for this role, require an ID check and references from two people who do not live at the same address as you. You’ll also receive an induction to Guide Dogs as well as safeguarding training and full sighted guiding training for this role to ensure you are confident helping someone with sight loss to navigate their environment. If you have lived outside the UK for a period of 12 months or more you will also require a certificate of good conduct.

Currently we are looking for volunteers who live in or can travel to the following areas. Please note that travel expenses are covered.

  • Drumchapel
  • Lambhill
  • Pollokshaws
  • Pollokshields
  • Castlemilk
  • Priesthill
  • Cardonald
