About Us

Rowing at Strathclyde is an extensive, competitive, engaging, and social sport with opportunities at all levels. Here, we have the opportunity to work with athletes across a range of abilities from those who have never set foot on the water, up to those striving for the British Rowing team.

A membership with Strathclyde University Boat Club provides you with access to the Clyde in our range of boats, as well as our facilities in The West Boathouse, including a new Strength and Conditioning gym. All of this is located a short walk from campus down on Glasgow Green.

The club is made of four squads: Novice Men, Novice Women, Senior Men, and Senior Women.

Our Novice Squads provide you with a beginner’s introduction to rowing. You have on the water training each day at the weekend, as well as regular group gym sessions, all of which can be attended as and when you want. Our Novice squads have had a lot of success, with medals won at last year’s British University Championships (BUCS), as well as beginners striving for the Scottish rowing team.

Our Senior Squads are for those with experience rowing, with training on Saturday and Sunday mornings, as well as Wednesday afternoons, and gym sessions throughout the week. Our seniors compete at high levels across the UK and have high aspirations for the next year.

As well as being competitive, all of our squads have recreational members, who row for either the social or fitness aspects of the sport.

We regularly have members and alumni competing and winning for the Scottish rowing team, as well as trialing for national teams around Europe. Noteworthy Strathclyde Alumni include Sam Scrimgeour who won the rowing World Championships in 2015 and Jack Burns who competed for the British rowing team in 2021.

As a part of the club, we provide you with the possibility of racing across the UK: from Inverness in the winter, to London and Nottingham in the summer. SUBC isn’t just focused on the racing calendar; we keep ourselves busy with an exciting social life, including regular pub trips, barbeques, and formal dinners and of course the annual sub crawl!

Rowing at Strathclyde gives athletes the opportunity to learn a new sport and meet different people, enhancing their teamwork and talent through a difficult, rewarding sport. For any more information on our squads, our calendar, or anything else, feel free to contact us – we look forward to seeing you on the Clyde!
