What does the Debating Society actually do?
Strathclyde Debating Society is a club where like-minded people gather each week to discuss current affairs, social justice, politics, philosophy, and more. We hold training sessions every Thursday at 5:30pm where we build upon our knowledge of the game, debate a selection of interesting topics, and socialise! In addition to our weekly meet-up, Strathclyde Debating Society has also been known to host multiple social events, show debates, and even competitions throughout the year. In short, we are an extremely active society, both on campus and in the wider debating circuit, that is always welcoming of new members.
Why should I join?
Debating has been known to build upon critical thinking, argumentative abilities, and persuasion techniques. These are skills that the Strathclyde Debating Society are committed to promoting in a relaxed environment. Multiple society members have also attested to improvements to their confidence as a result of taking part. We encourage anyone who would benefit from these things to join the Strathclyde Debating Society!
At Strathclyde Debating Society, we also provide our members with multiple opportunities to pursue debating competitively. We compete across the UK and Europe while hosting competitions throughout the year. Our society members have had countless successes at these competitions, adding to our ever growing trophy cabinet. If you thrive in a competitive atmosphere, or simply want to step out of your comfort zone and try something new, then debating is perfect for you!
Even if you are not interested in the practical or competitive benefits of debating, Strathclyde Debating Society still has a place for you. We are a friendly group that never misses a chance to socialise and are quick to welcome new members every chance we get. Anyone who joins the society is guaranteed to meet wonderful new people, make plenty of new friends, and gain access to a thriving social dynamic. In the past, the Strathclyde Debating Society has actually hosted numerous social events ranging from pub-crawls, hot-pot dinners, and board game nights. We are certain that there is something fun here for everyone! To prove this, Strathclyde Debating Society is holding a number of exciting events in Freshers Week. You can check them out via the links provided below.
