Strath Union is an organisation dedicated to supporting students throughout their years at university and beyond.
This opportunity is ongoing, with no end date. Closing date for applications is 08 Aug.
The Welcome Team is made up of a diverse group of current students from all faculties and years who encourage new and returning students to get involved with Freshers' Week. This amazing Team is responsible for setting up fairs, distributing essential information, offering campus tours and making Strath as welcoming as possible. Volunteers will need to have basic knowledge of the University and be approachable, friendly and enthusiastic.
What Freshers' Week will look like this year depends on Government guidance - we hope to have a blend of in-person and online activities - but regardless, we will still have loads of new students to welcome. In addition to helping students move in, handing out goody bags, answering questions and supporting events, you might be taking part in online activities, helping us brainstorm ways to engage with new students, or doing Zoom Q&As.
Your volunteering will be fully flexible to fit around your studies, work and other commitments - you can take part in as many or few volunteering shifts as you are able to! We do ask that you make a minimum commitment of 4 hours per week (one event or shift at halls of residence). You will always be volunteering with at least one other person, and you will be among the first students to get access to the new Union building. As always, we provide you with a team uniform (the iconic pink T-shirts)!
All you need to take part is enthusiasm for helping new students. If that's you, register your interest now!
Benefits to self
Welcome Team is loads of fun and lifelong friendships are usually formed within group. It’s a chance to meet new people and improve interpersonal skills, as well as boost your knowledge about the services available on campus.
Benefits to others
The Team makes an impact on thousands of new students arriving at Strathclyde by helping people make the most of Freshers' Week, being a friendly face at an uncertain time, and making sure new students have help finding their feet at University.
All key information about Freshers' Week and Union services will be covered in a 5-hour training session to ensure Welcome Teamers are able to deal with student enquiries with confidence. We'll also do some fun team building!
Additional training will be available for specific tasks.
Support and supervision details
The Welcome Team will be supported by the Vice President Community and Student Engagement staff, who will be available during all volunteering shifts.
