Strath Union is an organisation dedicated to supporting students throughout their years at university and beyond.

Welcome Team Volunteer

07 Sep 2026 - 01 Jun 2027

Closing date for applications is 01 Sep.

Welcome Team is back for another year of providing a warm welcome to new students joining us in September 2026.

Welcome Team Volunteer

The Welcome Team is a diverse group of current students from across all faculties and year groups who help new and returning students get involved, feel welcome, and make the most of their university experience.

While the team's primary role is supporting students during Freshers’ Week, volunteering doesn't have to end there. Once you join the Welcome Team, you'll have the opportunity to get involved in a variety of exciting events and activities throughout the academic year.

"Welcome Team will be one of the most rewarding, intense and fulfilling experiences that any student can take part in. You will make lifelong friends, enjoy new experiences and learn a lot about yourself. Plus you're also on the VIP list for all the Freshers activities." - C, Welcome Team Volunteer 2024/2025

What You'll Do

As a Welcome Team volunteer, you may:

  • Help set up fairs, events, and information stalls
  • Lead campus tours for new students
  • Welcome students and help them settle into university life
  • Answer questions, provide information, and distribute welcome packs and goody bags
  • Support Freshers’ Week activities and events
  • Assist with student engagement events throughout the year
  • Create a friendly, inclusive, and welcoming atmosphere for all students

Beyond Freshers’ Week

Joining the Welcome Team gives you access to additional training and opportunities to support a wide range of Union events throughout the year. Participation in these events is flexible and entirely optional, allowing you to get involved as much as your schedule allows.

Examples of events you may be able to support include:

  • Community Meals
  • Exam Breakfasts
  • Wellbeing Fairs
  • Welcome and engagement events
  • Campaigns and awareness activities
  • Cultural celebrations and student-led events

New opportunities will be shared with the team throughout the year, giving you the chance to gain experience, meet new people, and continue developing your skills.

Why Volunteer?

As a Welcome Team volunteer, you'll have the opportunity to make a real difference to the student experience while developing valuable transferable skills. You'll also:

  • Receive comprehensive training and ongoing development opportunities
  • Meet students from across the University
  • Build your confidence and communication skills
  • Gain experience in event delivery and student engagement
  • Enhance your CV through meaningful volunteering
  • Become part of a supportive and welcoming volunteer community

Time Commitment

Freshers’ Week will take place from 14–18 September 2026. Training will run the week before. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 4 hours during the week, although we recommend around 20 hours to get the most from the experience.

You will always volunteer alongside other team members and will receive the iconic pink Welcome Team T-shirt.

Ready to Get Involved?

All you need is enthusiasm and a willingness to help fellow students.

Register your interest today and join the Strath Union Welcome Team to help create unforgettable experiences for students throughout the year.
