Race Equality Officer Role

Race Equality Officer

The Race Equality Officer promotes inclusivity on campus and is a spokesperson and advocate for racial justice. This Officer sits on the Strath Union's Inclusion Committee and directly reports to the Inclusion President. They work closely with Executive Officers and other Equality Officers on campaigns concerning racial justice and equality.  

The officer must self-define as a student within the Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic community and be enrolled at University of Strathclyde. 

Term: April 2026 - April 2027

Time Commitment: Approximately 3-5 hours per week, variable throughout the semester

Honorarium: £1000 (paid in two instalments in November and April)

Useful Skills

Community engagement and teamwork skills

The ability to listen to, and advocate for, the concerns of students

The ability to navigate sensitive political, professional, and personal issues with impartiality and confidentiality

Key Meetings:

  • Inclusion Committee

  • Strath Union Student Parliament (monthly during the semester)

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with other members of the Inclusion Committee and Executive Officers on campaigns, projects, and events.   

  • Be accessible to students, field student inquiries and signpost them to appropriate resources and services  

  • Serve as an advocate for racial justice at the Union and University 

  • Work in partnership with relevant Strath Union staff, including the Voice Team and the Advice Hub

An honorarium will be awarded when:

  • The officer has led a campaign/project that champions racial justice on campus. 

  • The officer attends the Inclusion Committee meetings in the semester or has provided an appropriate reason for non-attendance.  

  • The officer has attended Student Parliament or provided an appropriate reason for non-attendance.

Role Specific Training

  • Extensive training and support will be provided to ensure you are fully equipped for the role.
  • Additional training and ongoing support are provided throughout the academic year including training workshops, conferences, events and project funds.
