Computational Thinking for All

Computer Science as the Fourth Science Subject in Schools

What's occurring?

A talk delivered by Dr John Levine, Senior Lecturer, CIS Director of Undergraduate Teaching and fellow of the RSA

Summary

Physics, Chemistry and Biology have become firmly estabilished as the three science subject taught in schools, and a typical science student in a Scottish school will probably take all three of these at Higher, alongside Mathematics and one other subject. If we look at the Faculty of Science at Strathclyde, we'll see that there is a subject missing: Computer Science. I'll argue that Computational Thinking is a vital skill in the modern world, equally as important as Mathematics, and at least as important as a science subject as the other three. I'll also argue that there's no reason why Computer Science shouldn't be an accessible subject, with teaching even as early as primary school, and certainly throughout secondary school. I'll then think about some of the obstacles in the way of this vision, and how they can be overcome. This talk is given John in his role as a Fellow of the RSA.
