World AMR Awareness Week

What's occurring?

What is antimicrobial resistance?

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death.

As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines become ineffective and infections become increasingly difficult or impossible to treat.

Why is AMR relevant to me?

Microbes are getting smarter, and more resistant to more antimicrobials

Whilst this may not impact you right now, AMR is predicted to cause over 10 million deaths per year by 2050 - which is more than cancer!
