The Strathclyde Aerospace Innovation Society is the University's largest aerospace society. Our focus is on entering international competitions in the fields of rocketry, aviation and space.
Badges explained
The Strathclyde Aerospace Innovation Society is the University of Strathclyde’s largest aerospace society. Our mission is to act as a platform for students to grow as engineers and leaders through participating in our large-scale extracurricular projects in rocketry, space systems, and aviation.
With over 100 new member signups last year, our members represent some of the university's most dedicated and enthusiastic students. The society has entered twelve world-renowned competitions over the past four years in a wide multidisciplinary range of topics. Over the years, StrathAIS has expanded from orbital spacecraft design to the design and manufacture of our supersonic rocket project, Taranis.
STRATHcube
STRATHcube is an ambitious student-led initiative, contributing to Scotland’s growing presence in space technology. This project revolves around launching a small satellite—known as a CubeSat—with a mission to improve Space Situational Awareness, which helps monitor and protect satellites from the growing risk of space debris.
STRATHcube is also much more than just a scientific mission—it is a transformative educational opportunity for Strathclyde students, of which over 40 of which have already been involved. STRATHcube has allowed students to gain hands-on experience in satellite design, project management, and has enabled their collaboration and networking with industry experts. The project has sparked interest in the space sector and has positioned Strathclyde as a key player in student-driven space innovation.
With the recent successful entry to the ESA: Fly Your Satellite! Design Booster program, STRATHcube has the chance to reach new heights. European Space Agency mentorship will help the team refine their design, solve key technical challenges, and elevate the project to its next level.
Rocketry
Our rocketry team was founded in 2021, we design and build high power rockets that we launch in the International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC), which is the largest rocketry competition in the world. We have competed in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 SAC competitions with our rockets 'Strathosphere' and 'Strathosphere MKII and MKIII', and placed 18th out of over 120 teams in the 2024 competition which was a huge achievement!
We recently took part in the 2025 International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC), hosted in Midland Texas, USA. This represents the pinnacle of student rocketry, being the largest intercollegiate competition of its kind in the world. In 2025, over 170 teams with 2,000 of the world’s best students competed in Texas. The event itself is sponsored by some of the largest and most influential companies in the Aerospace sector, such as Blue Origin, NASA, SpaceX and ProtoSpace MFG.
This was our first attempt of the 30K COTS category and at breaking the UK student apogee record. Due to a motor retention failure (which Aerotech has reimbursed us for in the form of a new motor), we did not have a successful flight performance. However, after a CATO with an O-motor, our rocket survived with very minor damage. This was a testament to our design and build quality and has only fuelled our desire even further to launch Taranis MK II and succeed.
September 2025 marks the seventh year of the society; we will be building on the successes of our previous years to enter even more ambitious and exciting competitions. This year we will be continuing our branches in rocketry and space systems and will be running the following projects:
We are looking for motivated students of any stage or degree to help us on this journey. To find out more, contact us and follow us on our social media channels.
