Women+ in Engineering

Welcome to Strath WiE: a student group dedicated to building community among women+ in Engineering at Strathclyde, including regular meetups for members and events engaging the wider community.

About us

Started during lockdown, we are a (currently) virtual club meeting every two weeks on Zoom, but hopefully soon we will be able to meet in person over coffee and tea! We discuss current events in the tech industry through the lens of feminism and racial justice, and catch up on each other's quarantine routines and school hacks. We are a partner group of the University of Strathclyde IEEE Student Branch and an affinity group of IEEE Women in Engineering.

Our primary goals are to build a community for those traditionally marginalised in engineering and to make a difference for each other, the Strathclyde engineering community, and the world. We aim to do this with...
  • events addressing issues surrounding women+ in engineering and science
  • events highlighting the work of women+ in engineering and science
  • regular informal meetups (currently all held virtually) to build community and develop a secondary academic support network and also have a bit of fun and get to know each other!
  • collaborations with other Strathclyde/Glaswegian student groups with shared goals

"Why the + after women?"

This group is meant for all those who hear "women+ in engineering", and think, "yeah that's me!" That includes folks who identify as female, non-binary, genderfluid, genderqueer, trans, gender nonconforming, and many other gender expressions. We welcome staff, post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students in the entire engineering faculty. In creating this group, we want to make a space within Strathclyde that is explicitly for non-cis-male engineers, it being a field that so often does not provide space at all for us.
Interested in getting to know us? Sign up for the society and we will invite you to our Welcome Event in October! (Details forthcoming)
