Motorsport - USM

Every year, the University of Strathclyde Motorsport designs, builds, markets and races a single-seater racing car as part of the global Formula Student initiative, a series of international competitions focused on developing engineering and business talent in a practical, competitive and high-octane environment. Since 2021, we have transitioned to manufacturing electric vehicles, racing at both Silverstone and the Hockenheimring.

Formula Student is an opportunity for anyone to develop many multi-disciplinary skills in our mechanical, powertrain, driverless or operations teams. With team members from a variety of different departments around the university, from years 1 - 5, there's a place in our team for everyone. The team are currently developing our fourth Electric Vehicle, and competed at the prestigious Formula Student Germany last season, so it is a very exciting time to be part of USM!

What is Formula Student?

Formula Student is an international engineering and design competition in which teams of students design, build and race single-seater race cars. Cars are judged not only on racing performance during dynamic events, but also on design and build quality, financial efficiency, environmental impact and the car's appeal to an open race car market in the cost and business case presentations.

How do I get involved?

USM has changed from open access to members to a short joining process for incoming new members to make sure we can get you up to speed easily. The discord will be open for a short time during semester 1, and then will become only accessible to paid members.
