About us

We have weekly rehearsals during the semester, in the Royal College Assembly Hall (RC471) on Friday evenings from 17:30-19:30, and perform a concert at the end of each semester. We go to the Student Union after most rehearsals, as well as holding a variety of other socials throughout the year. We are LGBTQ+ friendly and aim to make everyone in the orchestra feel as welcome as possible.

We play a wide selection of music, in a variety of styles, to suit everyone’s tastes and instruments. For example, we have played music from films such as Jurassic Park, How to Train Your Dragon, and Chicago; Christmas music such as Sleigh Ride; and classical music such as Dvorak's 8th Symphony. We take music suggestions before each semester and aim to tailor our choices to the instruments and talent available to us. Videos of our previous concerts are available on our YouTube page:

This year, we are excited to be working with our new conductor Isabella Gonzalez Diaz, as well as welcoming back our team of professional tutors. We have sectional rehearsals a few times a year where we split the orchestra into smaller groups to go over our parts in more detail.

Players are welcome to join us at any time of year, so don't worry if you can't be at every rehearsal. We accept students of all abilities and from all institutions, including Glasgow Caledonian and City of Glasgow College. Unfortunately we don't have the resources to provide instrument lessons, but if you already know how to play an instrument then playing in an orchestra is a great way to improve your skills.

There are no auditions - if you enjoy playing music with others then we would love for you to join us.

Formed in 1981, the Strathclyde University Symphony Orchestra has a long history, with each year's student committee bringing new ideas and perspectives on how to improve as both an orchestra and a student society. One successful improvement we made was to introduce a smaller chamber orchestra who rehearse on Monday nights, adding a different style of music to our performances. Thanks to our dedicated members, our rehearsals often restart over summer for members to enjoy a smaller, more casual group with some trickier pieces.

Beyond our regular rehearsals and socials, we have also been on holiday to Dublin in 2024 and to Prague in 2025. On these holidays we went to watch music performances, met with other student orchestras, and had a great time seeing the sights in another country. We are planning to tour Scotland in 2027!
