About us

UN Women UK Strathclyde is part of the UN Women UK’s University Network that is working in partnership to raise awareness about gender equality and make a positive change for women and girls through empowering women, providing equal opportunities and tackling violence. UN Women UK Strathclyde hopes to advance these aims and promote this message across the university and wider society through involving students in fundraising for UN Women, educating people on the issues affecting women worldwide and providing a support network for women and girls.

As a society we will organise events during term time and through these events, we hope to raise awareness about the importance of gender equality, in our university and elsewhere, to inspire our students to take action and challenge the status quo. We want to create a community that is intergenerational and intersectional, advocating for gender equality. Whether you're looking to engage in thought-provoking discussions, advocate for meaningful change, or connect with like-minded individuals, the UN Women UK Strathclyde Society is here to support you.

We aim to create a network committed to making change happen - both on campus and across our communities. This group is fully inclusive and open to all who want to join a group that is non-competitive and acting in meaningful ways.

We want to create an environment to share events, ideas and stories as peers, create a community ourselves, and a safe space in which people feel free to self-express.

UN Women is the global UN agency dedicated to advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

Founded in 2010, UN Women works at every level from policy and legislation to delivering grassroots programmes, to protect and promote the rights of women across the world.

Young people are today's activists and tomorrow's leaders. Let’s build this movement together.

Our 3 main objectives are:

1. Awareness - To raise awareness about gender inequality in the UK and across the world, and to promote solutions that UN Women, with its partners, are delivering.

2. Advocacy - To speak out for women's empowerment and UN Women's work both on campus, and in the local community.

3. Activation - To engage more students on campus and beyond to take bold, decisive action for gender equality

Some of our upcoming events include:

  • A stall at Freshers Week (you'll find us on Monday 15th of September) to chat all things gender equality, and society membership.
  • Our welcome event to welcome our newest members.  As with all our events, this will be a safe, inclusive space to connect with like minded people.
  • Join our feminist reading group to engage in some interesting and though provoking read and discussion.
  • Self defensive class(es) - helping to empower women through knowledge and physical movement.
  • Coffee get togethers - an informal space to grab a coffee and meet new people.
  • Speaker events (we'll share more about these throughout the year)

And lots more....
