Listed by Widening Access Strathclyde
The University of Strathclyde is a socially progressive Higher Education institution which values and celebrates the diversity of its student and staff community and is committed to widening access to education. The Higher Education Leadership Empowerment Network (H.E.L.E.N.) program, run by the University of Southern California, is designed to empower community college students through the development of leadership skills and also, an understanding of professional networking. You will contribute to the successful pilot of this exciting new collaboration between Strathclyde and USC, which will involve a total of around 20 students from both Strathclyde Business School and HaSS.
You will work closely with the Teaching Assistant employed by USC to ensure that Strathclyde students are able to access all of the resources made available by USC. You will help students with general enquiries and also with specific study support where required. You will support academic staff with assessment and will be expected to attend some of the taught HELEN sessions, which run every second Friday, working an average of 30 hours per semester. Due to the time difference, these sessions will take place 6-8pm. As a minimum, you will have a first degree and an interest in supporting students from diverse backgrounds. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds traditionally under-represented in Higher Education.
You will be able to:
· Work to support for students engaged in the HELEN leadership programme, providing practical, pastoral and academic advice as required.
· Attend an pre-agreed number of delivery sessions run by USC during twilight hours (6-8pm) to enable you to properly support students
· Work closely with the Teaching Assistant employed by USC to support US college students who are enrolled on the programme, to ensure that Strathclyde students benefit from equal and appropriate support.
· Work collaboratively with academic staff from HaSS, SBS and Equality and Diversity in order to achieve appropriate streamlining of activity and to support academic standards.
· Support academic staff with marking, providing feedback on formative assessments (e.g. written or verbal feedback on class presentations)
· Write, prepare and develop handouts and other basic learning support materials using appropriate media.
You will require excellent communication skills, be able to relate positively and professionally to students, colleague and international partners and be able to organise your own workload, ensuring deadlines and standards are met.
