Job Description

The Student Experience Directorate is looking to recruit a team of Student Ambassadors (SAs) to support the main student registration event in September. We want to ensure that our Student Ambassadors are representative of our entire student body and would therefore welcome applications from students across the full range of courses, from diverse backgrounds, and at different stages in their studies.

All applicants should be reliable and trustworthy, have excellent communication and customer service skills, enjoy helping people and be friendly, approachable and flexible.

Applicants should be either a current or recently graduated student at the University of Strathclyde, aged 18 years or over, and have evidence of the Right to Work in the UK.

Requirements

Skills, knowledge & experience:

  • Working knowledge of Pegasus (specifically relating to registration)
  • Detailed knowledge of the information on the Registration pages of  the University website
  • Experience of providing a high level of customer service and providing direct support, advice and guidance, as appropriate
  • Experience of working in a busy environment and under pressure

Personal Attributes:

  • Good interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills
  • High level of responsibility
  • Enthusiastic, helpful and approachable attitude
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • An understanding of the needs of new students, particularly international students
  • The ability to respond calmly and effectively to student enquiries
  • Able to deal sensitively with students using tact and diplomacy
  • The ability to work both as a member of a team and independently
  • Able to multi-task and work flexibly  
  • Previous experience of working on University Open Days or events is desirable but not essential

Role and responsibilities

Key Tasks:

  • Welcome students to the University, provide information and give directions
  • Assist new students (primarily international students) with the online registration process
  • Queue management - work pro-actively to effectively manage large numbers of students, taking decisive action to prevent the queues from becoming unmanageable and asking for assistance when necessary i.e. at peak periods
  • Identify what problem/issue the student has and resolve to set criteria
  • Make decision on when to escalate any issues/problems, if unable to resolve
  • Carry out any other duties which are appropriate to the post as may be reasonably requested by University staff

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a warm welcome to our new students and respond to questions and enquiries in a friendly and professional manner
  • Familiarise yourself with the training documents and ensure that you strictly adhere to the terms and conditions of employment
  • Communicate clearly with staff at the Welcome Desk ensuring any issues or concerns are escalated to the appropriate person

Dress code & Code of Conduct:

  • University Student Ambassador t-shirts will be provided, along with name badges, and these must be worn at all times during working hours
  • The use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited during working hours
  • As a representative of the University you should behave in a professional manner at all times, by being polite and courteous and making every effort to assist students as they progress through the building.

  • Closing date for applications – Wednesday 17/08/22
  • Shortlisting & interviews – 22/08/22 to 26/08/22
  • Training/briefing sessions– w/commencing Monday 29/08/22

Attendance at the interview and the training/briefing sessions is compulsory and we therefore cannot accept your application if you are unable to attend on these dates.
