This role will focus on maintaining and developing Strathclyde Students’ Union (Strath Union) societies and supporting them to engage members in innovative ways. This will include working closely with colleagues in the Student Opportunities Team to ensure student societies and activities are diverse, inclusive, and accessible. The role will support student groups with their events and deliver relevant training and workshops to volunteers. This position will also help to deliver and promote key Student Engagement department events and activities, including liaising with our Marketing & Communications team and creating dynamic online content.

Job Scope

Main Responsibilities:

  • Work with students and colleagues to maintain and develop a diverse, exciting, and relevant range of student societies and activities.
  • Support societies to engage new and existing members in innovative ways and ensure activities are inclusive and accessible.
  • Support student groups, societies, and volunteers to deliver their events and trips including coordination of risk assessments, transport bookings and appropriate insurance.
  • Oversee room bookings for all society and volunteer activity and liaise with colleagues to coordinate and maximise the use of space in the Union.
  • Liaise with relevant departments within the University to support society events and activities.
  • Carry out administrative duties including finance processing for societies, support for Societies Exec, and administration of the Active & Engaged initiative.
  • Deliver relevant training and workshops for volunteers including the creation and development of online and in-person training resources.
  • Communicate relevant updates and opportunities to committee members including regular societies newsletters.
  • Oversee a vibrant media hub for all media societies and volunteers within Strath Union.
  • Work alongside other Strath Union departments to coordinate planning and delivery of events such as the STAR Awards for student volunteers.
  • Coordinate and develop content for social media channels and webpages including videos and other digital media to promote activities and events.
  • Work closely with colleagues in the department to deal with general enquiries and provide general support to societies and volunteer groups.
  • Support the media societies with aspects such as licencing and the student media editorial panel.

Support:

  • Support the VP Community and other student officers to deliver events and workshops.
  • Support the work of the Student Opportunities Manager and other colleagues in delivering departmental projects, activities, and events.
  • Contribute to annual impact reporting for relevant areas relating to student Activities, fundraising and events.

Student Care:

  • Work in effective collaboration with Student Officers and all departments within Strathclyde Students’ Union.
  • Ensure that students’ expectations are exceeded wherever possible.
  • Deal with feedback in a courteous, efficient, and timely manner.

General:

  • Comply with all Strath Union policies, procedures, and governing documents.
  • Always work within Strath Union’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Be responsible for all health and safety requirements related to the role.
  • Undertake any other tasks commensurate with the level of appointment that may from time to time be reasonably requested.

  • Sustainability is a strategic priority for Strath Union and the post-holder will be expected to engage with sustainable workplace practices and relevant training such as carbon literacy.

Internal: Student Engagement Management, Elected Student Officers, Reps and Society Committee Members. Other Strath Union staff including Student Engagement, Finance and Marketing and Communications team members.

External: University of Strathclyde, NUS (National Union of Students), colleagues in other students’ unions, any other relevant external organisations to the role.

Other details

  • The role is subject to a 6-month probationary period.
  • The post-holder will be eligible to join the Strath Union workplace pension scheme.
  • The post may include weekend and occasional evening work.
  • It is expected that the starting grade for this role would be 5.1.
  • 31 days’ annual leave per year plus 11 public/bank/local holidays (pro rata as necessary).
  • Hybrid working may be available for this role.
