Do you want to work at Scotland’s number one Student Union? Looking for work that will be rewarding, exciting and gives something back to your fellow Strathclyders? Here at Strath Union we’re looking to recruit student staff for all areas of our services in the heart of the Campus for academic year 2024/25 and would love to have you onboard.

We are looking for students who enjoy working in a busy, fast paced environment and have great communication and customer service skills or the desire to learn and develop these. We are looking for student staff to work in the following roles:

  • Hospitality
  • Chef 
  • Content Creator 
  • Welcome Desk 
  • Student Engagement 

We are a real living wage employer with a current rate of £12 per hour and great flexibility to fit in with your studies.

Brief Description of roles

(Please note there might be slight changes to the role descriptions)

 

Hospitality:

This role will include working across our bar, catering outlet and coffee shops.

  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Prepare food and beverages
  • Operate tills
  • Keep all areas clean and tidy
  • Move stock when needed
  • Work at various events like drag bingo, comedy show, award shows and club nights
  • Input into the events programme with ideas and suggestions for student events
  • Extra duties when required
  • 8 hours per week minimum contract
  • Must be available in Glasgow from 9th September for training

 

Welcome Desk:

  • Being a welcoming first point of contact when students/visitors enter the Union

  • Responding to enquiries by email, phone, face to face and live chat 

  • Ensuring the Union reception area is kept tidy and is welcoming

  • Setting up rooms as required for society/external bookings

  • Facilities support

  • Extra duties when required

  • 8 hours per week minimum contract

  • Must be available in Glasgow from 9th September for training

 

Student Engagement:

  • Admin and project support for the Student Engagement Team which may include supporting societies, volunteering + Jobshop, campaigns and representation.
  • Admin work may include inbox management, website support, room bookings and support in delivering societies training.
  • Project based work supporting the Voice team on campaigns and representation including development programmes, research, student parliament and conducting student surveys.
  • Extra duties when required, for example events planning and support.
  • 8 hours per week minimum contract
  • Must be available in Glasgow from 9th September for training

 

Chef:

  • Follow budgets as set by the Senior chef

  • Help to prepare meals both internal and external for Strath Union

  • Keep records of all food coming into and out of the kitchen

  • Work with the Senior chef to develop food concepts

  • Keep up with industry trends in collaboration with the Senior chef

  • Responsible for deliveries and stock rotations in conjunction with Senior chef

  • Ensuring the facility is left in a clean and secure condition

  • Ensuring that waste is kept to a minimum 

  • Extra duties when required

  • 8 hours per week minimum contract

  • Must be available in Glasgow from 9th September for training

Skills required

  • Proven experience in commercial kitchens

  • Professional culinary qualification or relevant vocational experience  

  • Level 1, food safety award (will be provided if required)

  • Excellent communication and organisation skills

  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Dedicated to food quality and control

  • Strong knowledge of proper food handling and sanitation standards 

  • Good time management skills

  • Strong knowledge of international cuisine

 

Content Creator (Video):

  • Working with the Union comms team to capture and create videos for social media to share students stories with fun, engaging and informative content
  • Access to kit such as a gimbals & microphones provided
  • Evidence of experience and skills is essential to be considered.  Please keep in mind we will not be able to access Instagram accounts set to private
  • Opportunity to do additional shifts assisting with PR & Marketing
  • Minimum 20 hours per semester 
  • Availability must include evenings and weekend
  • Must be available in Glasgow from 9th September for training

  • Interviews will be taking place the week of the 5th August.
  • For the most part these will be group interview sessions comprising of a group task and short individual interviews.
  • All interview questions will be competency based.
