Student Carers

A student carer is someone who, at any point in their studies, provides unpaid care for a family member or friend who would not be able to manage without that support.

What support is available?

We are currently in the process of reviewing support for student carers at Strathclyde. Working with our VP Welfare, Lewis McDermott, we launched an initial survey to student carers and conducted focus groups. These will help us to learn more about the experiences of our students carers, including how we can help make things better.

What support does the university offer?

If you look after a family member or a friend in an unpaid capacity, who, due to illness, disability, a mental health problem, or addiction, cannot cope without your support let the university’s widening access team know.

They can offer you a range of support including before you submit an application to study at Strathclyde and as a current student with caring responsibilities.

Careers Module

This module focuses on career and employability learning and has been adapted from a module created by the Careers & Employability Service. This version has been redeveloped to support student carers in acknowledgement of the role you do and takes into account your commitments and responsibilities. In order to ensure more relevant information has been incorporated two student interns, who are carers themselves, were employed to review the original module, make recommendations and develop new content.

The Careers Service and the Widening Access Team would like to thank June Cochrane and Tara McCulloch for all their hard work in redeveloping this module.
