Gender Affirmation Fund

We are thrilled to announce the launch of Strath Union’s Gender Affirmation Fund, an Alumni Fund supported initiative – which will give trans^ and non-binary Strathclyde students access to mini-grants of up to £50 each to buy gender affirming items.

What is the aim of the fund?

The aim of the fund is to reduce the physical, mental, and financial barriers caused by gender dysphoria (a sense of distress or discomfort around an aspect of someone's gender experience). Gender dysphoria can have a huge impact on an individual's wellbeing, health and comfort participating in university life, and unfortunately many gender affirming items which help to alleviate dysphoria, are financially out of reach for students.

Who can apply?

The fund is open to all trans and non-binary students studying at Strathclyde University, especially those within this group who experience gender dysphoria and financial constraints. Students who have applied to the fund once already are welcome to apply for second round of funding.

By trans and non-binary, we mean people whose gender identity is different to the gender they were assigned at birth, including but not limited to trans women, trans men, people who do not identify with any binary gender, genderqueer, genderfluid and agender people.

What can I buy?

Applicants may want to buy packers, wigs, makeup, shapewear, breast forms and chest padding, binders and compression garments, swimwear, and other gender affirming items. This list is not exhaustive, so if a gender affirming item that you would like to purchase is not written here, please still apply and let us know what you what you want to buy. We don't need specific details, we just need to know that the grant is being used for the right purpose.

How do I apply?

You can apply by:

  1. Filling in the form with your name, your email address, UK bank account details, and what you intend to buy.
  2. Waiting for our confirmation email.
  3. Once you receive the confirmation email, you can go ahead and buy your item – just make sure you keep and send us the receipts!
  4. Send your receipts to strathunion.advice@strath.ac.uk, so we can reimburse the exact cost to your UK bank account.

If for any reason you are not able to purchase the item before receiving the fund, do not have access to a UK bank account, or have confidentiality concerns, please send us an email and we will find an alternative, safe way to get the money to you.

What if I want more than £50?

Unfortunately we are currently restricted to maximum £50 per person, but we hope more funds will become available if the initiative is successful. We will update this page with more information if this happens.

Where has the money come from?

Money for the gender affirmation fund has come from the Strathclyde Alumni Fund, which supports current Strathclyde students by funding student-led projects, clubs, societies and learning opportunities. We are grateful to the alumni who have made this project possible!
