The Big Hog-Friendly Lockdown Litter Pick

This opportunity takes place between 02 Nov 2020 and 18 Dec 2020. Closing date for applications is 18 Dec.

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society are running a UK wide competition to see which University can collect the most litter in and around the local community. Put on some rubber gloves and a mask, and go out with a binbag to collect any wrappers and ‘safe waste’!

How? Put on some rubber gloves and a mask, and go out with a binbag to collect any wrappers and ‘safe waste’. Litter can be collected at student residences or from the local community. You can litter pick on your street at home, at a local park, on a lunchtime walk - wherever! Just as long as you adhere to the Scottish Government’s COVID restrictions.

Then send a picture of the bin bags to Jodie.waite@strath.ac.uk by 5pm on 18th December to be added to Strathclyde's report to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society!

Please ensure that you:

  • Wear gloves
  • Cover any cuts
  • Keep hands away from your eyes and mouth
  • Wash hands straight away after litter picking
  • Wear sturdy, appropriate footwear and waterproofs if needed
  • Recycle any plastic, glass and aluminium
  • Adhere to social distancing and other relevant Government Covid procedures, such as wearing a face covering and only literpicking with people you live with. Please check Gov.uk for the latest up to date information.

Please avoid:

  • Sharp objects (e.g. broken glass)
  • Clinical waste (e.g. syringes)
  • Hazardous areas (e.g. fast running rivers)
  • Lone working if possible
  • Heavy lifting

If you find any dangerous, poisonous or hazardous materials, contact the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60.

The winning university will receive a free Hedgehog House and a bag of hedgehog food for their campus. All participants will be able to log volunteer hours, this will count as a community/sustainability initiative for the Clubs and Societies Active and Engaged gold award, and you’ll each receive your very own digital certificate from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society!
