Volunteer Befriender

Community Infosource are a Glasgow-based organisation primarily supporting refugees and people seeking asylum. We are looking for kind, friendly and committed volunteers to support refugees and people in the asylum system to overcome social isolation and become involved in community activities. Full training and support is provided to volunteers.

The purpose of the role is to act as a one-to-one befriender for people in Glasgow seeking asylum. This would involve building a relationship with an isolated community member, supporting them to build confidence and a sense of belonging. Volunteer befrienders will arrange outings and activities with befriendees on a regular basis, and will provide signposting for further support and/or community services and activities where required

What will I be doing?

· Making meaningful contact weekly (phone call or in person, depending on preference of befriendee)

· Supporting people seeking asylum to overcome social isolation and attend community activities

· Assisting befriendee to access community support services

· Identifying community activities suitable to befriendee’s interests

· Providing CIS with regular updates on progress and attending debrief meetings

What skills do I need?

· Good English language skills

· Knowledge of the issues people in the asylum system face

· A friendly and empathetic approach, with good listening skills

· Reliability and punctuality, particularly when meeting with befriendee

· Ability to maintain confidentiality

· Commitment to equalities, human rights and anti-discrimination

Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per week, for 6 months.

Training available

Full Induction training is provided to Volunteer Befrienders covering the following topics: - An Introduction to Befriending - An Introduction to the UK Asylum System - Safeguarding and GDPR - Boundaries - Trauma-informed Communication During their participation in the project, volunteers have the opportunity to participate in additional wellbeing-focused trainings on Practicing Self Care and Understanding Trauma.

Support and supervision details

Monthly 1:1 support and supervision sessions are provided to Volunteer Befrienders by the Befriending Project Coordinator.
