Candidate for the position of LGBT+ Rep
Looking out for the LGBT+ community at Strathclyde!
Hi, my name is Vinny Williamson, I am a second year student, and I’m the president of the LGBT+ Society! I’m a musician and a digital artist, and I’m a queer nonbinary person (he/they). I want to put the LGBT+ community first, and make the university a safer space for everyone!
As LGBT+ Rep, I will:
1. Start an “Ask, Don’t Assume” campaign around the union, to normalise asking for pronouns.
Start a campaign around the union, to spread awareness of asking for pronouns if you are unsure of the gender identity of someone you’re talking to, as this protects transgender and nonbinary people from misgendering and transphobia.
Campaign for all union staff to wear pronoun stickers, to protect staff from misgendering and transphobia.
2. Push for more gender neutral bathrooms in and around campus.
Re-sign bathrooms around campus so there is at least 1 gender-neutral bathroom per university building. This will aid those who struggle finding suitable toilets around campus (specifically transgender and nonbinary people).
3. Introduce LGBT+ counselling and support with the Disability and Wellbeing Service.
Start a drop-in counselling service that focuses on students who may need support regarding LGBT+ related issues.
Start weekly group counseling/therapy sessions for specific LGBT+ issues for students.
4. Push for university staff to undergo thorough LGBT+ training.
Push for frequent and up-to-date training on how staff can assist LGBT+ students, who may be struggling academically, socially, or emotionally due to issues regarding sexuality or gender identity.
