Future Proof Students

I’m Francis McKernan, 3rd year Engineering student

We are all invested in our health and securing rewarding careers. My three main strategies below will support us within engineering and within Strathclyde University. I would be honoured to represent you as your Engineering Faculty Rep.

Student Mental Health

I will build upon the progress engineering representative Sophie Gwynne has made towards improving student’s access to and awareness of mental health support as well as promoting Mental Health First Aid courses for faculty. The construction has the highest rate of suicide of any industry in the UK. It is vital that students maintain their own mental health and learn to recognise warning signs in their peers.

BIM Workflow Familiarity
At a recent Strathclyde-Industry workshop, a senior engineer commented that BIM experience is highly sought after. Familiarity with BIM workflow can be achieved in four to six hours of tutorials creating a base skillset that is valuable for a variety of coursework modules and for graduates seeking industrial placements. I am keen to develop learning resources to foster foundational BIM skills.

Environmentally Conscious Design

The building sector is one of the largest carbon emitters in the UK. To achieve net zero and true zero economies, it is crucial that students develop the skills to meet this challenge. I will work with faculty to provide enhanced opportunity for research and teaching in this area.
