Candidate for the position of Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic Rep
Integration Without Losing Culture
Hi! My name is Adanna Onu and I am running to be your next BAME Rep. I'm an MSc student and have previously been involved in running and working in committees for societies during my undergrad. These experiences have given me insight into representing other students and organising events.
My main goal if chosen will be to help with the integration of BAME students so that they don't feel like they are not being included. I understand that BAME encompasses a large number of people, from various backgrounds, and I promise to use my position to showcase the diversity within the community. I would use my position to represent BAME students and communicate their needs to the union and help raise any issues that may arise.
To help with the integration, I will look at ways to get BAME students more involved with extracurricular activities within and around the university, as it will not only help integrate with other non-minority members of the university but also, will be beneficial on your CV as clubs and societies can provide a variety of useful skills.
Also, I would like to create a campaign that highlights mental health within the BAME community as within the community there is a certain stigma attached to it which I believe should be broken. Also, i would help encourage us to be more open and willing to discuss our mental health with others. I believe that by sharing experiences not only helps you but others around you.
