Candidate for the position of Vice President Welfare
Reaching every student for a better Strathclyde!
Hello Strathclyders!
I’m Rachael Okoh; a 5th year Architecture student (Masters) and would love to be your next VP welfare.
I started at Strathclyde in 2021 when COVID restrictions were easing but feel the activities of the union can be enhanced to reflect the rich and diverse student population to boost students’ participation and collaboration between departments and societies.
I’m an international Student guide and an executive in the Nigerian Student Society, where I have heard some of the important issues students face. I have some ideas to address these issues hence my decision to stand for office to represent students’ welfare.
My manifesto:
Start a Creative Hub to foster social connections and interactions as well as participation in the student government through creative arts.
Increase the number of part-time jobs on the Strath Job shop; while lobbying for industry-based job opportunities for every department.
Increase awareness of existing and new student services including financial aid, counseling etc. that support student well-being.
Negotiate with Landlord associations alongside other executives, and execs from other Glasgow universities to make securing accommodation seamless.
Lobby the school to implement lecture-free days for students who don’t have them. Leverage on these days to foster collaborations and drive initiatives that improve mental health!
If elected, every student’s mental and social well-being will be my priority. I will create student friendly channels for communicating and addressing welfare concerns.
