Candidate for the position of Vice President Welfare
Vote George Williams, for a brighter future and student welfare that thrives!
Personal Summary:
My name is George Williams, and I am a current 4th Year Business Student at Strathclyde. I work in the Student Union bar and have a keen passion for mental health and well-being. I aim to help improve the welfare of students of Strathclyde to the best of my ability.
Relevant Experience:
As a final-year student, I understand the stress of higher education and its impact on academic progress. Having previously dropped out due to poor mental health, I empathize with the challenges students can face.
I have worked within the student union for almost two years, building critical relationships, and was a core member of the Hear-to-Listen volunteer program's development in year one, demonstrating my commitment to promoting student well-being.
What I aim to do
Increase financial aid and scholarships to help offset the cost of tuition and living expenses by negotiating with the university and CFO.
Collaborate with hospitality providers around campus to offer discounted food and goods to students.
Lobby with the university to ensure first-year students are guaranteed accommodation.
Partner with university wellbeing services to offer workshops on stress-management and self-care.
Encourage the organisation of more student-run events, such as traditional cooking classes and international food fairs, fostering a sense of belonging and cultural exchange.
Take steps to mitigate potential disruptions to students' studies and ensure their well-being is not adversely affected.
Build on existing efforts to create fit-for-purpose study spaces by partnering with the university to establish additional safe and quiet study areas.
