Candidate for the position of Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic Rep
Because BAME doesn’t mean SAME, so choose US to change the B.S.
We are a 1st generation African-Scottish and Indian-Latina duo of students. Together we know we can represent the Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnicity (BAME) identity at Strathclyde.
Through our combined experiences as a home and international student, working as student staff at Strath Union, having culturally diverse backgrounds, and talking to many BAME students, we recognise that:
no two groups or people within BAME are the same.
the importance of a supportive community.
We will commit to listen, connect and champion our voices!
Listen
We will facilitate a regular space for BAME students to have their voices heard and respected by their Rep.
We will communicate with all BAME groups regularly so we can truly represent the BAME group diversity.
Connect
We will encourage community between BAME groups, including connecting international and home students.
We will work with the BAME groups, VP Inclusion and Strath Union to run dedicated social events and encourage student participation in the Decolonising the Curriculum campaign.
We will create a safe space for staff, students and graduates of BAME backgrounds to foster community and solidarity on campus.
Champion
We will champion the voices of BAME students beyond the dedicated ‘month’ of history, independence days, and cultural or religious celebrations.
We will highlight BAME perspectives as they intersect with identities such as women, LGBT+, widening access, and more.
We will proactively support the BAME community when wider issues arise in Scotland, the UK, and worldwide.
