Naval Architecture Development and Research - NADAR

The Naval Architecture Development and Research (NADAR) Society is a design-focused group for anyone interested in ships, offshore assets, and/or any maritime-related subject. This interest can be from an academic perspective, historical, or pure curiosity.

We are welcome to all students, whether you are studying something ship-related or not!

At the start of the academic year, members can propose design and debate topics. Once we finalise on a specific project, we work in groups and create a presentation at the end of the year. Some of the activities our members have participated in during the 2025/26 academic year include:

• Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) Ferry Design Project based on the Aberdeen-Shetland Route
• Debates, with topics ranging from utilisation of nuclear energy aboard ships to potential use of Arctic routes for shipping
• Movie Nights
• Christmas Dinner
• Sponsored Ship Energy Efficiency Conference in Athens
• Dockyard Visit
• Regular sports and pub socials after Weekly Meetings
• Freshers' Week Maritime Tour of Glasgow and Game Night

As a Strath Union Society, we can apply for grant to fully sponsor 2 student members to attend industry related conferences. If you are interested, please reach out. Additionally, through our association with the Royal Institute of Naval Architects Scottish Branch (RINA SB), we can provide our members to meet other students, academics and professionals in industry. For example, through site visits, conferences, and end of year project reviews which are attended by professional and academic members part of RINA SB. You can apply access the free RINA student Membership Application here.

If you have any questions, you can email us at unionsociety-nadar@strath.ac.uk, or hit us up on Instagram, Discord, or WhatsApp.

We meet every Friday in Graham Hills (GH) 5.10 from 18:00! Looking forward to seeing you there.
