Strath Union is your community

Strath Union is deeply concerned by reports of racist behaviour, hate incidents and disorder associated with demonstrations that have taken place in Glasgow City Centre in recent days. Such behaviour seeks to create fear and division and has no place in our city, or our Students' Union community.

Glasgow is a city built on the contributions of people from all over the world, and our community reflects that diversity. Strath Union stands firmly against racism, xenophobia, and hate speech in all their forms, and we will continue to challenge behaviour that makes members of our community feel unwelcome, unsafe, or unwanted in the city they call home.

To our students; we see you, we stand with you, and you belong here. Strath Union is your community. We want to be clear that Strath Union operates a zero-tolerance policy on racism and hate speech, in any form, whether on campus, online, or in the wider city. Anyone experiencing or witnessing racist abuse within Strath Union, or during Strath Union activity is encouraged to report it via our complaints procedure, and through the University's Report and Support.

We recognise that recent events may be distressing, and that some students may be feeling anxious, unsafe, or unsure of where to turn. Please know that support is available, and that you do not have to face this alone.

If you are in an emergency situation, the emergency services (Police, Ambulance & Fire Brigade) can be contacted by phoning 999.

If you are facing an issue on campus, you can speak with university security by calling +44 141 548 2222. Security is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If you are in need of any support, Spectrum.Life has 24/7 availability for students wishing to access support including on mental health and wellbeing matters via phone or app. For more information visit this webpage.

Samaritans also offer 24 hour emotional support to anyone needing someone to talk to. Call them free from any phone on 116 123, email jo@samaritans.org, or visit www.samaritans.org.

We will continue to monitor the situation, work with the University and external partners, and support students that may be affected. In the meantime, we encourage all students to look out for one another, prioritise their safety, and reach out for support if needed. Strath Union is for every member of our community.
