For this week's Society Story, we sat down with StrathTV to talk about their recent project Photographic and future plans for the society. President Aidan Cooper shares some exciting, yet vague, details about this year's upcoming projects and everything you need to know to get involved.
What is StrathTV?
We’re Strathclyde’s one and only filmmaking club!
We make films, mostly short films, and over the last year, we’ve been working on our first project since the newest team took over. The club has made films in the past but last year was the start of a new committee and, we hope, a chance to grow the club.
Our project last year was ‘Photographic’, a 40-minute thriller. It was a big project and we all learned alot5 about the process of writing, recording, and editing a film. We’re hoping that what we learned on ‘Photographic’ will help us do more projects this year, as we understand time management a little more now.
Do people need any experience or knowledge to get involved?
No prior knowledge or experiences is necessary at all. All of us committee members came in with no experience and have learned everything by getting involved with StrathTV.
I (Aidan) for one had no experience apart from liking films. So, you don't need to know anything. I mean now I'm the president and know the stuff needed to make films but that’s just from getting involved over the last year.
There’s a lot of options for how to get involved - writing, directing, editing. There’s a chance to give anything and everything a go!
There are no barriers to entry, our memberships are free, and you can grab one on our Strath Union page. Our meetings are open to both members and non-members, but it’s encouraged that you grab a membership if you’re planning to get involved long-term with any projects.
Why should people get involved?
Why would you not want to come along and give it a shot? Chances are you’ll find something about the film creation process to love!
We're going to have weekly meetings a general chat, a chance to keep track of projects, gather ideas and socialise!
We’re also planning bi-weekly writers’ rooms to focus on writing the scripts for upcoming projects and a chance to pitch your ideas to the club.
There’s going to be lots of opportunities to get involved on shoot days too. You can sign up for directing, camera work, acting and more. We’ll be scheduling shoot days to fit as many members schedules as possible and believe there’ll be something for everyone.
What do you have planned for the year ahead?
Our next project is going to be a series of 10-minute episodes for a student drama. We’re eager to hopefully explore some of the challenges and struggles that students face. I’m excited because it’s my idea that we’ve grown into this plan and the plan is to have it evolve over the course of the series from this light-hearted show into a show that will tackle some more serious things. I won't get into it too much, but I'm really happy with the ideas we have so far.
It's good to have a plan for the year already. This way people who come on board can know exactly what they’re signing up for and last year we didn’t reach this point in planning until semester 2, so we feel like we’re growing as a team already.
Originally, we had hoped to do two big projects a year but that's kind of moved into one big project and then lots of smaller stuff.
The smaller things include collabs with other societies. Helping them record short films/promotional videos. We already helped the Language Cafe out with recording a video a few weeks ago and hope to help more societies, which we’ve already had lots of interest in.
The goal for the year is to hopefully create a little collection of short films and projects that provides as many students as possible the chance to get involved.
What has been the most rewarding part of being involved in StrathTV?
I have met great people and I would say made some lifelong friends. I've got to discover this new passion because I hadn’t realised how much I liked film until getting involved with StrathTV. I’ve discovered this cool thing that I love doing and this year I’m really excited to share this passion with members and hopefully help them discover what they love about film making. It’s very rewarding to find something to be passionate about.
